Access Road for Duntish Farm - Case Study
Duntish Farm is a farm situated in Dorchester that predominantly keeps cattle. The farm has been in operation for many years, with dairy as its main commodity. However, the farm does grow arable crops, which are fed to the animals.
Its rural location being what it is, Duntish Farm only has one main means of access. As you would imagine, an access road is a necessity for any working farm. The issue was that the access roading leading to Duntish Farm had seen better days and was in desperate need of replacement.
The Challenge
Of course, being a working farm, Duntish Farm’s operations need to continue and cannot halt while a new access road is laid. This presented a sizeable challenge for us as it meant figuring out a way to carry out the work without hindering access. We worked closely with the client to devise a workaround, ensuring that normal farm operations could continue.
Our Solution
Bourne Surfacing & Civils Ltd is the South’s leading surfacing and civil engineering specialist. We have many years of experience handling projects of all shapes and sizes, so we were more than up to the challenge. We leveraged our knowledge and expertise to devise a solution that would let us complete the work without inconveniencing the farm workers.
We began work on the access road while making sure to allow for enough room for farm vehicles to get by. This meant completing the road in stages and using a 6-man gang to speed the work along. To reinstate the surface, we opted for a 2-coat system comprising a 20mm binder and a 10mm surface course.
The work took around two days as we were conscious of prolonging even this minimal amount of disruption. Our team worked quickly while remaining diligent, ensuring that no issues arose. Once the work was finished, we inspected the surface from top to bottom to make sure the surface was level and free of imperfections.
We then hosed the area down and advised the client on how long it would be before the tarmac had cured enough to be driven on.
The client was extremely satisfied with the results and delighted with our approach, which kept any disruption to a minimum. They were so delighted they awarded us a maximum score when reviewing us.
